Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 23518 (Transport Canada recall no. 2023-322). Certain school buses repaired under that recall require a second repair. Safety Risk: A short circuit can cause wiring to overheat and create the risk of a fire, even while the school bus is parked and turned off. Corrective Actions: To reduce the safety risk, International Motors advises that you should park your school bus outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed. International Motors will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your school bus to an authorized service facility to replace the brake pressure switch and wire harness.

Corrective Actions: Navistar will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your bus to a dealership to replace the bolts that attach the transverse torque arm to the rear axle, and tighten them correctly.

Corrective Actions: IC Bus advises you to park your school bus immediately until you can schedule an appointment with any IC Bus dealer to have your vehicle repaired. The dealer will remove and reinstall the steering wheel, apply thread-locking compound and tighten the nut correctly.

Note: This recall only affects buses equipped with a PSI 8.8 L gasoline or second generation (Gen II) LPG engine. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, a bus that is disabled could create the need for a transfer of passengers in an uncontrolled environment, which may create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: Navistar will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your bus to a dealer to update the engine control module (ECM) software.

    Issue: On certain school buses equipped with a Cummins B6.7 diesel engine, the electric fuel heater could overheat and melt. Note: This recall replaces Transport Canada recall 2019-149. Vehicles that were repaired under that recall also require this repair. Safety Risk: A fuel heater that overheats could create the risk of a fire. This could also cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Cummins will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your school bus to a Cummins authorized service center to disable the fuel heater. The fuel heater will be replaced by installing a plug in its place. Additionally, the fuse supplying electrical power to the fuel heater will be removed and a cover will also be installed over the wire harness connector.

This could result in an unintended command to crank the engine when the key is in the run position and the transmission is in the park or neutral position. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to have an overlay harness and relay installed to provide electrical power to the starter solenoid.

Corrective Actions: Cummins will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Cummins service location to install a new fuel heater and correct the wiring to the fuel heater. Additionally, the fuel heater fuse will be changed to a 30-amp fuse, and the fuse size information in the owner’s manual and vehicle-mounted fuse map will be updated.

This could result in the switch becoming stuck in the on position and cause the brake warning light to illuminate. While the brake system would continue to function normally, an operator may be required to stop the vehicle and transfer occupants to another bus. This could create a hazardous situation with students near the roadway for an indeterminate amount of time, and expose them to an increased risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect the lot code on the brake pressure switch and replace as necessary. Note: This problem would set fault code 33-520941-5.

Correction: Dealers will apply dry lubricant to the latch assembly and cycle the handle to work the lubricant in.

Correction: Dealers will replace the LPDM relay with a relay that has no manual adjustment.

These issues could result in a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will replace the suspect hood latch straps with certified hood latch straps.

This could increase the risk of injury for the passengers exiting the school bus. Correction: Specialty Manufacturing Inc. will provide owners with a replacement stop sign blade assembly. If owners are not comfortable installing the blade assembly themselves, they can take their vehicle to a dealer for the installation.
