  Issue: On certain school buses, brake fluid may be present in the brake pressure switch and wire harness. As a result, the brake switch could short circuit. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 23518 (Transport Canada recall no. 2023-322). Certain school buses repaired under that recall require a second repair. Safety Risk: A short circuit can cause wiring to overheat and create the risk of a fire, even while the school bus is parked and turned off. Corrective Actions: To reduce the safety risk, International Motors advises that you should park your school bus outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed. International Motors will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your school bus to an authorized service facility to replace the brake pressure switch and wire harness.

  Issue: On certain school buses equipped with a Cummins B6.7 diesel engine, the electric fuel heater could overheat and melt. Note: This recall replaces Transport Canada recall 2019-149. Vehicles that were repaired under that recall also require this repair. Safety Risk: A fuel heater that overheats could create the risk of a fire. This could also cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Cummins will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your school bus to a Cummins authorized service center to disable the fuel heater. The fuel heater will be replaced by installing a plug in its place. Additionally, the fuse supplying electrical power to the fuel heater will be removed and a cover will also be installed over the wire harness connector.

  Issue: A problem with the left-rear brake caliper on certain school buses may cause the brake pads to drag and overheat. This could cause damage to brake components and to the wheel speed sensor, and could result in the ABS warning light turning on. Safety Risk: In certain school districts, an active brake warning light requires a driver to park the bus immediately. This could result in the transfer of children to another bus in an uncontrolled environment. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to an authorized repair facility to replace the left-rear brake caliper.

Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with a Cummins B6.7 diesel engine, the electric fuel heater could overheat and melt. Safety Risk: A fuel heater that overheats could create the risk of a fire. This could also cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Cummins will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Cummins service location to install a new fuel heater and correct the wiring to the fuel heater. Additionally, the fuel heater fuse will be changed to a 30-amp fuse, and the fuse size information in the owner’s manual and vehicle-mounted fuse map will be updated.

  On certain vehicles equipped with 8.8L liquid propane gas engines, the liquid propane delivery module (LPDM) relay for the propane booster pump and scavenge pump may experience intermittent continuity where the contacts in the relay may not make contact. This could cause the fuel pump to stop running, which could result in a hard start, or an unexpected engine stall without the ability to restart, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the LPDM relay with a relay that has no manual adjustment.

  On certain school buses equipped with a Ricon S-Series wheelchair lift, the platform could potentially crack due to bent knuckle link arms and/or defective bearing. Overtime, the platform could separate of the rear portion of the pivot plate making the lift inoperable and putting the lift operator at risk of injury. Correction: Owners will need to make an appointment with the local Ricon Dealer to have the lift inspected and repaired. Note: This is an expansion of recall 2015-611.

  On certain school buses, the hood latch straps used to latch the hood closed may become elongated and not return to their original specified length. This could cause the hood latch to not stay in the latched position while driving, and/or the hood opening unexpectedly during vehicle braking, which could could compromise the driver’s ability to see the road and its users. These issues could result in a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will replace the suspect hood latch straps with certified hood latch straps.

  Certain school buses may not conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 131 - School Bus Pedestrian Safety Devices. The STOP decal may not adhere properly to the stop sign and could peel off without warning, which could cause it to fail to meet the requirements of the standard. This could increase the risk of injury for the passengers exiting the school bus. Correction: Specialty Manufacturing Inc. will provide owners with a replacement stop sign blade assembly. If owners are not comfortable installing the blade assembly themselves, they can take their vehicle to a dealer for the installation.
