  Issue: On certain school buses, brake fluid may be present in the brake pressure switch and wire harness. As a result, the brake switch could short circuit. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 23518 (Transport Canada recall no. 2023-322). Certain school buses repaired under that recall require a second repair. Safety Risk: A short circuit can cause wiring to overheat and create the risk of a fire, even while the school bus is parked and turned off. Corrective Actions: To reduce the safety risk, International Motors advises that you should park your school bus outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed. International Motors will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your school bus to an authorized service facility to replace the brake pressure switch and wire harness.

  Issue: On certain school buses with hydraulic brakes, the brake pressure switch could leak. If this happens, the brake switch could short circuit. Safety Risk: A short circuit can cause wiring to overheat and create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Navistar will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your school bus to an authorized service facility to replace the brake pressure switch. If there is brake fluid found on the brake pressure switch connector or fuse, the wire harness will also be replaced.

Note: This recall only affects buses equipped with a PSI 8.8 L gasoline or second generation (Gen II) LPG engine. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, a bus that is disabled could create the need for a transfer of passengers in an uncontrolled environment, which may create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: Navistar will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your bus to a dealer to update the engine control module (ECM) software.

  Issue: On certain school buses equipped with a Cummins B6.7 diesel engine, the electric fuel heater could overheat and melt. Note: This recall replaces Transport Canada recall 2019-149. Vehicles that were repaired under that recall also require this repair. Safety Risk: A fuel heater that overheats could create the risk of a fire. This could also cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Cummins will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your school bus to a Cummins authorized service center to disable the fuel heater. The fuel heater will be replaced by installing a plug in its place. Additionally, the fuse supplying electrical power to the fuel heater will be removed and a cover will also be installed over the wire harness connector.

  Issue: On certain buses, the outer handle for the roof hatch (emergency exit) could break. If this happens, it would be difficult to open the roof hatch from outside the bus. Safety Risk: An emergency exit that is difficult to open could increase the risk of injury in an emergency. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to an authorized service facility to replace the roof hatch outer handle.

  Issue: An overload condition in the Body Control Module (BCM) from the starter solenoid could cause damage to the starter crank output circuit of the BCM. This could result in an unintended command to crank the engine when the key is in the run position and the transmission is in the park or neutral position. Safety Risk: Unintended engine cranking while someone is working in the engine compartment could increase the risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to have an overlay harness and relay installed to provide electrical power to the starter solenoid.

This could cause damage to brake components and to the wheel speed sensor, and could result in the ABS warning light turning on. Safety Risk: In certain school districts, an active brake warning light requires a driver to park the bus immediately. This could result in the transfer of children to another bus in an uncontrolled environment. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to an authorized repair facility to replace the left-rear brake caliper.

Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with a Cummins B6.7 diesel engine, the electric fuel heater could overheat and melt. Safety Risk: A fuel heater that overheats could create the risk of a fire. This could also cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Cummins will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Cummins service location to install a new fuel heater and correct the wiring to the fuel heater. Additionally, the fuel heater fuse will be changed to a 30-amp fuse, and the fuse size information in the owner’s manual and vehicle-mounted fuse map will be updated.

  On certain school buses, the brake pressure switch was made using an incorrect material that could swell when exposed to brake fluid. This could result in the switch becoming stuck in the on position and cause the brake warning light to illuminate. While the brake system would continue to function normally, an operator may be required to stop the vehicle and transfer occupants to another bus. This could create a hazardous situation with students near the roadway for an indeterminate amount of time, and expose them to an increased risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect the lot code on the brake pressure switch and replace as necessary. Note: This problem would set fault code 33-520941-5.

  On certain school buses, a brake air line may be routed improperly and could result in a kinked line. This could cause the vehicle to pull to the right during braking or cause improper operation of the anti-lock braking system (ABS). This could create the potential for a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect and reroute the air line from the lower relay valve YAW port to the left brake modulator valve as necessary. Any kinked air lines will be replaced.
