Issue : On certain trucks equipped with an optional passenger-side bench seat, the seat may not be properly attached to the floor. As a result, the seat could move or detach in a crash. Safety Risk: A seat that moves or detaches could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Action: Volvo Trucks will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your truck to a dealership to replace the passenger-side bench seat fasteners

Issue: On certain trucks, the t-bolts for the transmission air tank straps may have been over-tightened. This could cause the straps to deform and allow the air tank to drop to the ground. If the air tank detaches, the transmission would not shift. Safety Risk: An air tank that completely detaches from the truck could create a road hazard for others. A transmission that does not shift properly could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Volvo will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their truck to a dealer to inspect the transmission air tank straps for damage. The straps will be replaced as required.

Issue: On certain trucks, the fuse for the transmission electrical circuit may have a lower rating than what is required. As a result, the fuse could blow while driving. This could cause the transmission not to shift. Safety Risk: A transmission that does not shift properly could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Volvo will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their truck to a dealer to install the correct fuse.

On certain vehicles, the Engine Control Module (ECM) may develop an internal electrical short circuit that could blow a fuse in the ECM's electrical supply circuit. This could cause the engine to stall without warning and prevent the vehicle from being restarted. Engine stalling would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the ECM.

On certain vehicles manufactured with a 2-piece steering shaft, the lower or upper steering shaft may disconnect from the coupler. Separation would result in complete loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: As an interim measure, dealers will drill a hole through the steering shaft and install a roll pin. When parts become available, dealers will replace the 2-piece steering shaft with a one piece shaft. Note: This recall supersedes recall 2015-561. Vehicles repaired under the previous recall will require re-inspection and potential repair.

On certain vehicles, a defect in the ball joint seals on the drag link could allow corrosion to form in the joint, leading to accelerated wear. This could result in ball joint failure, potentially resulting in a loss of steering control which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the drag link on affected vehicles. Note: This is an expansion of recall 2015-466.

On certain vehicles manufactured with a 2-piece steering shaft, the bolt torque on the joint that couples the upper and lower steering shaft could be lower than specification. This could cause the bolt to loosen, which may result in separation of the two shafts. Separation of the two shafts would result in complete loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Instructions will be sent to owners advising them to tighten the bolt as an interim measure. Dealers will inspect the steering shaft, and affect repairs as necessary. This could occur without prior warning and under certain conditions, extend stopping distances, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will update vehicle software.

On certain vehicles, bolts that hold the brake caliper to the backing plate may not have been tightened to specification, and could allow the brake caliper to separate from the backing plate. This would disable braking at the affected wheel, which could cause the vehicle to pull to one side during braking, and also increase stopping distances, which could result in a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect bolts and repair as required.

On certain trucks, the seat belts may not comply with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 209 - Seat Belt Assemblies. Due to a defect in manufacturing, the seat belt buckle may not release as required by the standard. This could hinder egress from the vehicle in an emergency, increasing the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace affected seatbelt buckles.

On certain vehicles, the secondary clutch disengagement switch may have been omitted during vehicle assembly or, in some instances, removed during servicing. As such, primary switch failure would cause the automated manual transmission’s clutch to remain engaged when the brakes are applied. This could increase stopping distances, possibly resulting in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will install a micro-switch at the brake pedal and update the software to run a diagnostic on the switch during engine start-up.

Both issues could lead to electrical arcing, which could result in a fire causing property damage and/or personal injury. On certain vehicles, the wheel rims may have been manufactured incorrectly and could fail. A wheel separating from the vehicle could cause a loss of control and a crash. In addition, the errant wheel assembly could strike a vehicle, stationary object, or a bystander. These issues could result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the wheel rims. Note: Further evaluation revealed that no Canadian vehicles are involved.

On certain trucks equipped with Bendix ATR-6 Antilock Traction Relay valves, in extremely cold conditions (at or below -18 degrees Celsius), internal ATR valve leakage can occur. This could cause unintended brake application, which could overheat the affected brakes and cause a fire. Also, in certain low traction conditions, unexpected brake application can cause a loss of vehicle control and a crash. These issues could result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will update the cover assembly on the ATR valves.

On certain trucks, the driveshaft may not have been welded correctly during the manufacturing process. This could allow the driveshaft to fracture along the length of the tube seam weld when torque is applied. The fractured tube can twist or sever, which could result in additional damage to the driveline, the vehicle to which it is attached, and any additional nearby components. Should the brake air lines become damaged, it could allow spring brake application, causing immediate brake lock-up. If this occurs while the vehicle is in motion, it could result in a crash. Also, failure of the driveshaft would result in lost vehicle propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash. Either condition could result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the driveshaft assembly.

On certain vehicles, the slack adjuster housings may have been manufactured incorrectly, which could allow the housings to fracture and fail. As a result, the wheel brake to which the slack adjuster is attached would no longer function, which could increase vehicle stopping distances. Should a steer axle slack adjuster fail, it could also cause the vehicle to pull to one side during braking. Either problem could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the slack adjusters.

On certain vehicles, the tire description may be incorrect on the certification label, which is a non-compliance to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 120 - Tire Selection and Rims. The description listed on the label may be for a tire with a lower rating that cannot support the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) listed, which may result in a potential tire failure. Correction: Updated labels will be mailed to owners of affected vehicles, along with instructions for proper installation.
