On certain motorcycles, contamination between the valve tappet and cam may cause the hardened surface of the valve tappet to peel if the surface shape of the valve tappet is convex. This would allow the inner part of the valve tappet to come in contact with the cam, which could cause both the valve tappet and cam to wear, increasing the valve tappet clearance. If the valve tappet clearance becomes large, it can result in an abnormal noise and can cause the engine to stall. An engine stall could lead to a loss of stability of the motorcycle, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: For motorcycles with odometer readings of 4,000 kilometers or greater, dealers will inspect the tappet clearances and will replace the valve tappets and camshafts if the valve tappets clearances are greater than the specification. For motorcycles with odometer readings of less than 4,000 kilometers, dealers will replace the tappets and camshafts, because the tappet clearances may be within the specification at low mileage even if there is abnormal wear.

On certain motorcycles, the fuel tank breather hose may have been kinked during assembly. This could result in fuel flow through the breather hose to be obstructed and the fuel tank internal pressure could become abnormally high or low, causing deformation of the fuel tank, or in some cases could lead to a crack in the fuel tank. If the fuel tank develops a crack, fuel leakage can occur, which in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire. Correction: Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel tank breather hose. If the inspection shows that there was obstructed flow through the breather hose caused by a kink in the hose, the fuel tank will also be replaced.

On certain motorcycles, the regulator/rectifier assembly may have been produced with insufficient adhesion between the power module (circuit board) and the rectifier case. Due to this insufficient adhesion, heat generated on the power module circuit board can cause the circuit board to deform. This could cause excessive heat on the circuit board and uncontrolled electric current output, which can result in insufficient charging current being provided to the vehicle's battery. Battery discharge could lead to engine stalling and/or a no-start condition. Lost propulsion, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the rider's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the regulator/rectifier assembly. Note: This recall may be superseded by recall 2016-022 for certain models.
