On certain vehicles equipped with Kidde fire extinguishers with black plastic handles and valves, the fire extinguishers may become clogged or require excessive force to activate. Also, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury, and fail to discharge. In case of fire, failure of the extinguisher to function could result in injury and/or property damage. Correction: Owners will be provided with instructions on how to inspect the fire extinguisher to see if it is recalled. Replacement fire extinguishers will be supplied by Kidde directly. If the mounting plate were to separate from the trailer frame, vehicles handling could be affected, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling various 2003-2018 Crossroads, Dutchmen, and Keystone recreational trailers equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V755-5127.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. Risk: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy: Keystone will notify owners and instruct them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2018. Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling certain model year 2016 Retreat recreational trailers manufactured July 13, 2015, to September 24, 2015, and model year 2016 Residence recreational trailers manufactured April 2, 2015, to September 2, 2015. The affected vehicles may have been manufactured with an insufficient weld on the rear mounting plate that the detachable A-frame is bolted to.
Risk: If the A-Frame plate detaches from the frame while the vehicle is in motion it can reduce vehicle handling, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Keystone will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the welds and repair them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on October 22, 2015. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-866-425-4369. Keystone's number for this recall is 15-238.
