How to read a VIN: all 17 characters, explained
Every vehicle built since 1981 carries a 17-character Vehicle Identification Number, and none of those characters is random. A VIN is a compressed biography: who built the car, where, with what engine, in which model year, and in what order it rolled off the line. Once you know the structure, you can read a surprising amount of it by eye — and catch a suspicious VIN before you ever hand over a deposit.
The three sections of a VIN
A VIN splits into three blocks:

Position 1: where the vehicle was built
The first character alone tells you the build country:
- 1, 4, 5 — United States
- 2 — Canada
- 3 — Mexico
- J — Japan
- K — South Korea
- S — United Kingdom
- W — Germany
- Y — Sweden/Finland
- L — China
That Honda badge doesn't tell you where the car was assembled — the VIN does. A CR-V starting with 2 came out of Alliston, Ontario; the same model starting with J was built in Japan. Cross-border shoppers should care: assembly location can matter for recall campaigns, which are sometimes filed differently in each country for the same defect.
Positions 2–3: the manufacturer
Combined with position 1, these identify the specific manufacturer and division. 1FT is a Ford truck, 2HG is Honda of Canada, WBA is BMW Germany, 5YJ is Tesla. There are tens of thousands of registered WMIs, which is why a decoder beats memorization.
Positions 4–8: what the vehicle actually is
Each manufacturer encodes body style, engine, drivetrain, and restraint systems here — and each does it differently. This is the part of the VIN you genuinely can't read by eye. It's also where a decoder earns its keep: the same five characters that look like noise resolve into "2.0 L four-cylinder, CVT, front-wheel drive, four-door sedan."
Position 9: the check digit
Position 9 is pure math — a checksum computed from the other sixteen characters. Transpose two characters or invent a VIN, and the check digit almost always betrays it. It's the first thing our decoder verifies. One honest caveat: the check-digit formula is mandatory for the North American market, so some vehicles built for other markets fail it legitimately.
Position 10: the model year
A single character encodes the model year: K is 2019, L is 2020, M is 2021, and so on (letters I, O, Q, U, Z and the digit 0 are never used). The code cycles every 30 years — A meant 1980 and means 2010 again — which is why a decoder cross-checks it against the rest of the VIN instead of trusting it blindly.
Positions 11–17: plant and serial number
Position 11 is the assembly plant (manufacturer-specific), and the final six characters are the production sequence — literally the order your car came off the line.
What a VIN can't tell you
A VIN describes what a vehicle is, not what has happened to it. Accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and ownership history live in separate (and mostly paid) databases. Anyone claiming to give you a free full "history" from just a VIN is either overpromising or reselling something.
